While in black out a projected video of myself looking into the camera will play for the audience. As I am looking around in the video, a series of voice overs will play. They will consist of recordings from my family and friends telling the audience about different dreams I have aspired to have or live out. For example, my uncle will tell the audience about how, when I was twelve, I told him,’ by the time I get married, I want to be rich enough that I seriously have to consider a prenup.’ When these voice overs have played through, lights will come up on stage revealing myself standing below a large hanging scroll. As an intro, with the aid of music, I will unfold the scroll and reveal the hanging checklist of things to achieve to have the ‘perfect life’ -these will reflect some of the quotes mentioned by my family. In a comic way, I will attempt to complete all that is on the list in as fast as time as possible - my aim, though I do want to complete the list, is to create a shambles on stage: the impossible list. It could contain anything from, ‘be a millionaire’ to, ‘ride in a hot air balloon’ - all of which I will have to find some way of performing on stage.
The stage will become cluttered; things will drop from the ceiling, the pace will build and build. I want to create a spectacle in which the audience don’t even know where to look. I would also quite like to keep a ‘stage’ persona. By that, I mean, though things may be going wrong on stage due to the nature of some of the tasks and the speed at which I am getting through them, I would like to maintain a persona that is oblivious to any failure on stage. Taking inspiration from the idea ‘the show must go on’ and ‘just keep smiling’, I wish to create a very fake and constructed persona who ‘performs’ all tasks. Only when the list is completed will I drop the persona.
On completing the list I want the stage to be a ridiculous shambles with glitter everywhere and a multitude of colours. Amongst this I would like to have a camera on stage that will feed live to a projection. It is only when I am live on camera am I my real self. I want to talk as me, take a breath and explain my deepest dream and how I have regretted some decisions in life.
Once I have revealed this, I will leave the camera and revert back into my persona to perform my deepest dream. This performance will go wrong…very wrong. It will be comic but also, potentially, uncomfortable as I really don’t want to acknowledge the failure and my only aim for this final performance is to actually do the task my dream requires me to do. This will happen at the end of my full performance and so I will only have a short amount of time to complete it. If I fail, I must stop and bow when my time is up - this will be controlled through music.
The whole point of this piece is looking at what we aspired to be when we were younger, what drove us to want those things and why have we failed to live out those dreams. Spectacle, failure and ambition are the three themes of my piece.
